Simple Pleasures - Peonies

Natalie Bulatova licensed thru Shutterstock
I think peonies might very well be the most gorgeous of all flowers. They look magical to me. Like illustrations of flowers in fairy tales. They remind me of nightingales singing in golden cages and crumbling follys in forgotten woods.

I like the bowl-shaped ones the best -- all those delightful shades and hues. There are supposedly anywhere from 25 to 40 varieties. I think the confusion adds to their charm.

Oddly, I can never think of the scent of peonies. Do they even have a scent? For me, their appeal is all visual.
